CAN YOU DEFINE THAT for yourself? 00:33:42 Jon Corippo: Matt said he was going to make fun of me this am - can’t wait!! 00:33:49 Charles Williams: Morning Matt! Love your sessions! 00:33:51 Paula Santilli: Hi from Buenos Aires, Argentina! 00:34:40 Jon Corippo: Don’t even say school board meeting! 00:35:34 Charles Williams: ::snap snap:: 00:36:12 Jon Corippo: Don’t listen to that teacher voice - use YOUR instinct as a HUMAN first!! 00:36:24 Dr. Rick Jetter: STOP, STOP, STOP . . . is OK to say! 00:36:52 Melissa Fisher: WAIT...teachers are human??? I feel like that's a fact many like to ignore... 00:36:58 Dr. Rick Jetter: How do YOU make the world LESS complicated for YOUR students? 00:37:38 Lita Briscoe: Students need us now more than ever. It is mind boggling how much trauma students face on a daily basis. 00:37:56 Jon Corippo: Don’t be a content deliver expert - be a classroom experience designer!! 00:37:59 Dr. Rick Jetter: What do you do with a colleague who says, "I cannot get through my content (in time)? 00:38:06 Vanessa Heller: I sing and dance… 00:38:53 Dr. Rick Jetter: YES! 00:39:14 Livia Chan: The gift of relationships is so valuable & what brings the greatest joy. 00:39:25 Bambi Narvarte: YES! 00:39:46 Vanessa Heller: And inquiry….. I have a pacing calendar… sometimes Rome falls, sometimes it doesn’t….. that can all be Googled. But deep thinking, developing big ideas, asking driving questions must be taught and fostered. 00:39:52 Dr. Rick Jetter: There is a difference between delivering the content and having students CREATE the content! 00:40:04 Jon Corippo: Here it comes! 00:40:24 Livia Chan: Love that! We are in a golden age. 00:40:34 Jon Corippo: Yeah Matt! 00:40:35 Erik Francis: We need to start teaching students and standards and stop teaching “stuff”. Treat the standards as the finish line. Use the curriculum as the tool that will help students rise to, reach, and go beyond the standards. Instruct by tiering to the DOK Level where students are and guide and support them to rise to, reach, and go beyond the DOK bar. Let students discover the way they understand and can use their learning. Assess to determine where students are and what they need, and let them choose their grades. 00:40:45 Jon Corippo: 100% Erik 00:41:13 Erik Francis: Teachers need to trust and discover their artistry and the capability of their students. 00:41:59 Dr. Rick Jetter: https://www.amazon.com/Deconstructing-Depth-Knowledge-Teaching-Learning/dp/1951075153/ref=sr_1_1?crid=38H87OMC3A6I9&keywords=erik+francis&qid=1642866624&s=books&sprefix=erik+francis%2Cstripbooks%2C50&sr=1-1 00:42:08 Dr. Rick Jetter: An incredible book! 00:42:19 Livia Chan: I love how the technology expands the "walls" of our classroom. 00:42:48 Jon Corippo: Note: no actual math at “Cool Math Games” - it’s a trick for unsuspecting teachers! 00:42:57 Maria Irene Pinheiro: Mr.Francis I totally agree with you but that is something that is hard to implemente when in some countries there is a set curriculum that one must deliver because at the end of the schoolyear there are exams. 00:43:06 Erik Francis: Tech is the tool. We need to teach and trust students to use the tool effectively and to its capability. 00:43:38 Jon Corippo: Wait. I wear Jellies. 00:43:43 Stacy Benton: I agree, Jon!! No Cool Math Games for me! 00:43:44 Jon Corippo: Right??? 00:44:09 Vanessa Heller: I used a can of Aqua Net a week…on my spikes. 00:44:26 Dr. Rick Jetter: We also had Jon come in for a week and SHIFT so much of what we were doing! https://www.amazon.com/EduProtocol-Field-Guide-Student-Centered-Possibilities/dp/194644460X/ref=sr_1_3?crid=32B1UB9X4P557&keywords=jon+corippo&qid=1642866727&s=books&sprefix=jon+corippo%2Cstripbooks%2C55&sr=1-3 00:44:42 Erik Francis: Maria - When I talk about curriculum, I’m talking about emphasizing the programs and product we use to teach What are the learning intentions students must rise to, reach, and go beyond? 00:44:46 Dr. Rick Jetter: We also had Jon come in for a week and SHIFT so much of what we were doing! https://www.amazon.com/EduProtocol-Field-Guide-Student-Centered-Possibilities/dp/194644460X/ref=sr_1_3?crid=32B1UB9X4P557&keywords=jon+corippo&qid=1642866727&s=books&sprefix=jon+corippo%2Cstripbooks%2C55&sr=1-3 00:45:03 Livia Chan: For everyone who joined recently, WELCOME! We are grateful you are here! Please feel free to share your thoughts in the chat. 00:45:28 Eric Nichols: Thank you Matt for this message! 00:45:45 Livia Chan: Great to see you here, Sandra! :) 00:45:54 Jillian DuBois: Hi Sandra! 00:46:02 Stacy Benton: Thank you, Matt!! I am ready for Jillian and Livia! 00:46:07 Jillian DuBois: #GloryDays are HERE! 00:46:07 Erik Francis: Maria - You teach math or fractions, but what is the goal and expectation for demonstrating proficiency or performing successfully? How will you guide and support students to achieve and surpass those goals and expectations? How will you use your programs and products as tools or instruments to rise to, reach, and go beyond the standards? 00:46:12 Dr. Rick Jetter: Sometimes we INADVERTENTLY do something that we do not MEAN to do. BLAMELESS, but REFLECTIVE! 00:46:16 Erik Francis: What exactly and how deeply? 00:46:24 Livia Chan: Thank you, Stacy! Thanks for joining us! :) 00:46:29 Jon Corippo: Admins don’t make that much more - they just work more days!! A lot more days 00:47:05 Erik Francis: I tell teachers with tech you are given a Tesla to drive. Stop driving it like a Ford Edsel. 00:47:06 Jillian DuBois: Hi Stacy! So excited you are here! 00:47:22 Helena Gaspar: thank you! 00:47:27 Robert Knowles: Well said Matt 00:47:45 Erik Francis: Good job, Matt. 00:48:19 Jon Corippo: We are moving there whether we acknowledge it or not!! Agreeing that it is happening makes it more fun! 00:48:46 Maria Irene Pinheiro: Mr.Francis, 00:49:48 Jillian DuBois: Create a culture of FAMILY. 00:49:52 Livia Chan: YES, Jon!! I tell my students that I will be there teacher for life! 00:50:04 Eric Nichols: love that approach Jon. 25 years of US! 00:50:10 Livia Chan: I am a LIFETIME guarantee! :) 00:50:45 Erik Francis: You mean the blood bern pathogens training? 00:51:45 Eric Nichols: Here we go! Awesome opener and more awesome to come!!! Excited for this 00:51:58 Maria Irene Pinheiro: I am now a retired teacher I was not talking about my own experience because while i was teaching I always challenged the status quo of education in my country and did a lot of innovative things with my students.I gave them a voice so to say and could see them thrive. 00:52:06 Lita Briscoe: https://youtu.be/tgnanM6bvCc 00:52:29 Jon Corippo: Good for you Maria! 00:53:21 Lisa Marie Bennett: Is it just me, or is the audio and video not matching up? 00:53:35 Denise Austin: I don't have any video at all 00:53:44 Dr. Rick Jetter: What do YOU do to STOP boredom???? 00:54:09 Denise Austin: Pacing of the lesson can help 00:54:13 Helena Gaspar: some gaming, for example 00:54:15 Jon Corippo: We have video, Denise - make sure Zoom didn’t get minimized 00:55:02 Jon Corippo: HAHAHAHA - WOW, yes Jillain, I was this too!! And I STOPPED. Having so much more FUN and success now!! 00:55:27 Dr. Rick Jetter: For anyone struggling with the audio and video matching up, it probably has more to do with bandwidth . . . just sit tight. The audio message is powerful. Appreciate you all! 00:55:34 Jillian DuBois: Right, Jon? We have truly evolved….. 00:55:52 Karin HOLLE: Give students choice! Let them them decide how they want to access content or concepts and how to share their findings 00:56:09 Jon Corippo: Yeah. A skilled educator know that copying is not learning. And that a seating chart won’t fixed bored kids. 00:56:15 Robert Knowles: If you are interested after this awesome PD see Livia go into her chapter on the Pushing Boundaries (PB) Podcast https://www.facebook.com/pushingboundariesllc/videos/5489252787814283 00:56:20 Jillian DuBois: Yes, Karin!!! 00:56:40 Dr. Rick Jetter: What are your thoughts about students who copy off one another? Cheating or still learning? 00:57:46 Maria Irene Pinheiro: I onceencouraged the students to create a kind of theatre play out of a set book they had to read and it was a success. They recorded it on vídeo and had a great time doing it. 00:57:58 Livia Chan: @Chris, love that...and the more you can bring your own energy, students mirror us. 00:57:59 Jon Corippo: I call it contributive - we are all learning together. 00:58:25 Denise Austin: It's not copying if its collaborative 00:58:33 Dr. Rick Jetter: Interesting book. I haven't heard of it before. 00:59:01 Jon Corippo: We do an Eduprotocol called Number Mania - instead of EACH kid getting 30 facts (takes 2 weeks!) each kid submits ONE fact via Google Forms and we get 30 facts in 5 minutes! Faster learning! 00:59:03 Livia Chan: @Karin, giving students choice has changed how I teach. I tell my students if I forgot to offer choice, to ask for it! 00:59:07 Dr. Rick Jetter: If we share how WE are weird, that is a coooool activity! 00:59:17 Jillian DuBois: Rumple Buttercup: https://www.amazon.com/Rumple-Buttercup-Belonging-Yourself-Heirloom/dp/0593480422/ref=sr_1_1?crid=M2V9CLL5STZJ&keywords=rumple+buttercup&qid=1642867639&s=books&sprefix=rumple%2Cstripbooks%2C81&sr=1-1 00:59:43 P Lichty: I think it depends on the task; if it is a summative, it’s cheating, if it’s a formative, they are at least learning something though I admit I do discourage it unless it was designed as a partner/group activity 01:00:17 Karin HOLLE: @Livia it helped with my lesson design, half the times their ideas are much better than mine :) 01:00:21 Livia Chan: Flexible seating is the best. They work better in a spot they feel more comfortable. 01:00:59 Jillian DuBois: One of my students sits under my desk to do all of her work. All students know that is HER spot to learn best + respect that. That brings me JOY! 01:01:03 Stacy Benton: YAY!! I firmly believe in flexible seating! It has completely transformed teaching, learning, and engagement in my classroom! 01:01:05 Angela Jefferies: My students love flipgrid. I have several who do such great jobs, but seem embarrassed when I show it. However, they keep doing it. They are 5th graders, so I guess they have to pretend they don't like it. lol 01:01:31 Livia Chan: @Karin, yes!! I am ONE person trying to meet the needs of all. If I include choice, they feel empowered to be their own learner. 01:01:58 Jon Corippo: My rule: if an assignment seems sucky to me, I don’t assign it. 01:02:26 Jillian DuBois: We have to truly KNOW them. Know them well enough to understand WHAT will keep them inspired + engaged! 01:02:37 P Lichty: Voice and choice is so important; I introduced it to the 8th grade this year and they have been sucked into so many books 01:03:11 Livia Chan: Students doing the thinking rather than being told helps their brain attach new to old information. 01:03:22 Jon Corippo: Change the pedagogy - change the outcome. Content can stay the same! 01:03:49 Livia Chan: @Jon, I LOVE that rule! We have the opportunity to make lessons engaging so WE enjoy teaching it more! 01:04:27 Livia Chan: @P Lichty, what a great feeling to inspire so much reading! Congrats! 01:04:35 Alexis Underwood: "Invitation to Notice" from Jeff Anderson is something I love for grammar and anchor texts. 01:04:37 Jon Corippo: Livia - it totally matters! I have to keep in touch with my 10 YO self! 01:05:15 Maria Irene Pinheiro: A change in pedagogy really can make the difference and turn students who sometimes refuse to participate in class into active doers. 01:05:35 Stacy Benton: Just ordered Rumple Buttercup! Thanks, Jillian! 01:05:37 Maria Irene Pinheiro: I speak from ex+perience in my classes 01:05:50 Jon Corippo: Correct, Maria - in fact, that’s our ACTUAL job - engaging kids to be their best selves! 01:06:11 Livia Chan: @Sandra, I'm happy to meet you on Zoom to talk about what you can do. Let's set up a meeting time! :) 01:06:33 Jillian DuBois: Your littles will love it, Stacy - and I know you will create some FUN activities! Let’s chat! 01:06:52 Karin HOLLE: I would say Student choice, voice and agency is an unbeatable combo.... 01:07:03 Dr. Rick Jetter: How do you STRETCH kids? 01:07:10 Jillian DuBois: Just LOVE them. Let them find their unique passion + style of learning. Brings such confidence! 01:07:17 Dr. Rick Jetter: Livia just challenged US! 01:08:34 Livia Chan: An idea might be to see how you can incorporate the arts: how can you add elements of drama, singing, dancing, and fine arts. 01:08:53 Stacy Benton: The ability to copy is a struggle for many of my littles! Why put them through that frustration when there is little benefit?! 01:09:20 Jon Corippo: Livia - slide making involves that artistic approach, my kids made 15-20 slides every day, using all their colors, ideas and shapes! 01:09:30 Dr. Rick Jetter: You can teach your students "Oh Mylanta." 01:10:05 Livia Chan: @Jon, wow, that's incredible! When you can offer opportunities for students to use their creativity, they are more engaged! 01:10:19 Stacy Benton: ❤️ this story!! 01:11:10 Livia Chan: Students are social learners! 01:11:44 Livia Chan: The opportunity to learn with new people grows their relationships too! 01:12:00 Jennifer Froman: I can’t get the 300 Tech Tools to load. Can you put up the website again 01:12:03 Jon Corippo: I call it a “studio classroom” - there’s a buzz 01:12:13 Livia Chan: I love how I can pull out my popsicle sticks to choose random partners or small groups. Kids get excited to find out who they're working with. 01:12:38 Livia Chan: We do a drum roll on our desk after each pair is chosen. Builds excitement! 01:12:40 Karin HOLLE: That is why these two years have been so difficult here, in my country schools have been closed (just second semester of 2021 they started going two hours a day) this has had a huge impact on their SEL 01:12:53 Jon Corippo: Uh oh, popsicle sticks can be very harmful! Be careful wit the non-random volunteer thing! 01:13:25 Debbie Tannenbaum: Love the idea of cathedral thinking 01:13:31 Jon Corippo: I’m going to share that in the session with Cori. HEre’s my do better: don’t raise your hand, I’m calling on EVERYBODY! 01:14:46 Livia Chan: Jon, to call on everyone, I often use whiteboards. They each have one so they can ALL be involved at the same time. You're calling on all! 01:15:08 Jillian DuBois: Cathedral Thinking by Tanya Dalton/Jon Acuff: Episode 44 https://www.buzzsprout.com/1556747/9402301-atg-44-it-s-your-life-so-live-it-on-purpose-my-inspiring-conversation-with-tanya-dalton 01:15:10 Erik Francis: How about this? Ask the question. Have that student who volunteers or always speaks up to start the conversation. Then have that student pick someone else in class to respond. Now you have all your students engaged because they are not only responding but also on their toes waiting to see if one of their classmates choose them. We need to turn the teaching and learning over to the students more. 01:15:27 Dr. Rick Jetter: What 1 thing are you going to do on Monday? 01:16:01 Alexis Underwood: Love "Atomic Habits!" 01:16:07 Erik Francis: Don’t ask students the answer to activities, items, or tasks. Ask them to explain how they got their answer, justify why the answer or argument is accurate or inaccurate, and consider what else they could do with their knowledge. Answers come free thanks to technology. 01:16:14 Debbie Tannenbaum: Love Atomic Habits! 01:16:18 Jon Corippo: Livia - correct! We can use tech to call on everyone in easy ways: Everyone make a slide with one word and one pic - 4 seconds each to share - or use a one question drawing quiz in Quizizz - or a single short answer in Socrative - super fast, super equitable, super easy 01:16:54 Dr. Rick Jetter: What a GREAT opening series of sessions! Now we have 2 AMAZING GENTS!!!!!!!!!!!! 01:16:56 Bambi Narvarte: PEARDECK is great to have everyone answer 01:17:06 Livia Chan: Thank you! 01:17:09 Jillian DuBois: Thank YOU for listening + engaging! 01:17:12 Stacy Benton: Thank you, ladies! So many great ideas to implement Monday! 01:17:13 Lita Briscoe: Or Nearpod too 01:18:43 Dr. Rick Jetter: What is an expectation, anyway? Adult expectations or student expectations? OR BOTH? 01:18:48 Vanessa Heller: Deficit mindset si so harmful…. 01:18:52 Vanessa Heller: is 01:18:54 Alexis Underwood: Socrative and whiteboard.fi are also wonderful for all scholars to reply. 01:18:55 Livia Chan: We have to believe that students CAN! 01:19:02 Jillian DuBois: I just recently connected with Matt, Basil - he is amazing! 01:19:36 P Lichty: I have a student that keeps saying “I can’t do that” and I just have to keep telling her, “yes you can, you just do it differently than I do and there’s nothing wrong with that” 01:19:38 Livia Chan: It stems from our beliefs about students. Do we believe in them? 01:21:01 Jillian DuBois: Honestly, I believe we collectively need to intentionally help other teachers/leaders be confident with KNOWING their students. SO key in their progress. 01:21:05 Livia Chan: Students need to know you believe in them. Believe in them until they believe in themselves. It's empowering. 01:21:11 Maria Irene Pinheiro: We need to be always encouraging students. While i was still teaching(I am retired now) I valued everybprogress they made even when itwas a small one .That made loads of difference because they got more confidente in themselves. 01:21:35 Dr. Rick Jetter: Can YOU have direct conversations with kids about what they are going through or do you shy away? 01:22:09 Jon Corippo: I don’t here any noise! 01:23:12 Livia Chan: Here's an explanation about empathy vs sympathy by Brene Brown: https://youtu.be/1Evwgu369Jw 01:23:53 Dr. Rick Jetter: What are the implications to INCREASE expectations? What will YOU do? 01:24:06 Jon Corippo: When teachers think kids can’t achieve, it’s a death spiral, because they lower the expectations EVEN MORE, which is even more BORING and sometimes insulting to the students who do EVEN less! 01:24:35 Jillian DuBois: Every day is POTENTIAL for GROWING. 01:25:22 Angela Jefferies: My problem is more the students not having expectations. I teach in a tiny town with high poverty level. I have some VERY bright students who don't care, and some lower level students who feel it won't change anything,. 01:25:27 Dr. Rick Jetter: How do YOU define GIFTED? 01:25:34 Erik Francis: You do a talk amongst yourself when asking questions. Think about Linda Richman on “Coffee Talk”. Get verklempt over the silence from questions and have them talk amongst yourself. 01:25:34 Jon Corippo: Neat trick - don’t give them THINK time, give them WORK time. Let kids GOOGLE the question before they answer - OR have them do a quick open ended question or have them do a Thin Slide - one pic, one word, 3 mins to build = Work time! 01:25:47 Lita Briscoe: Learning in the Fast Land goes into brings students up to the grade level standards. 01:25:59 Jillian DuBois: YES. Special Ed + ESOL are GIFTED. Please PLEASE let’s identify them as such! 01:26:39 Jon Corippo: I had a SPED kid last year - 3 teachers said “he won’t do ANY work for you”, guess who got an A on the Latin Roots quiz and grew 54 point in math??? 01:26:43 Rebecca Coda: The struggling student will highly benefit from an Oh Mylanta opportunity to succeed even at the smallest win. 01:27:15 Vanessa Heller: Underrepresentation in gifted programs is a real issue. And a disservice to all students. Right now GATE programs are accessed by those families who know how to raise a fuss, work the system, etc. We need multiple measures for identification, universal screening for all students, and differentiated teaching within each and every classroom. 01:27:17 Rebecca Coda: Parents send their very best to school. 01:27:31 Erik Francis: There’s gifted, talented, and gifted and talented. Talented means you can do something better than anyone else or have developed a unique set of skills. Gifted means you see or approach things divergently but struggle to express and share your knowledge and thinking clearly and comprehensibly. Gifted and talented is you think divergently and can use your talents to express and share your knowledge and thinking in a way that’s clear and comprehensible. 01:27:56 Rebecca Coda: Families are our biggest win. Co-setting goals based on their family and life goal is a big win. 01:27:57 Vanessa Heller: And Gifted Ed IS special Ed! We do not fund its therefore we barely recognize its value for all students. 01:28:33 Jon Corippo: I’m sorry y’all - I think we are ALL gifted, school just talks us out of it =( 01:28:42 Lita Briscoe: all students would benefit from learning strategies set aside for gifted learners 01:29:04 Rebecca Coda: Strategy: My Future Self Have students create a vision of who they want to be as an adult. What experiences do they have, who is in their life, what kinds of things make them happy. When we connect our academic goals from the perspective of supporting their Future Self is impactful. 01:29:35 Rebecca Coda: We eliminate biases when we Let Them Speak. Sometimes all it takes is making connections and just asking them. 01:29:49 Maria Irene Pinheiro: I Have had some students who were gifted and talented in some subjects but when they came to the english class they sometimes didn't want to commit to doing the tasks in class. 01:30:01 Karin HOLLE: One thing you can do if you have a student in ESOL / family from another country (been there, lived with my kids in USA coming from Peru) get to know that kids country, customs, etc. don't assume you know the country from what you have seen in the media / tv 01:30:01 Rebecca Coda: How do you reach your second language learners? 01:30:03 Livia Chan: Yes! And teachers can really make an impact on helping students discover their gifts & how their gifts shine in the world. 01:30:07 Angela Jefferies: +I tutor a SPED second grader online. He has an AMAZING memory for so many facts. He just struggles with math. He is SO bright. 01:30:16 Vanessa Heller: @Jon You and I disagree, but I think we CAN agree that within each classroom, a teacher’s goal should be to reach and teach all students. Gifted students are rarely gifted across the board and not necessarily gifted academically (i.e., the gifts AND talents). 01:30:31 Karen Hamilton: Not every parent is a help, some parents are the ones that cause the learned helplessness and it is an extra struggle to keep the student making progress. 01:30:43 Erik Francis: Think about filmmakers when it comes to gifted, talented, and GT. Steven Spielberg is gifted and talented. He has a unique vision and view and can express it through storytelling and filmmaking. Francis Ford Coppola is talented. He can take works written by others and adapt it into film. George Lucas is gifted. He has a unique and divergent ideas, thoughts, and vision, but he struggles to express it clearly and comprehensibly to others. If you ever read THE STAR WARS - his original version of STAR WARS - it is very different from what was produced. He needed Marcia Lucas to edit the film and John Dykstra to make his vision come true. He needed Lawrence Kasdan to write THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI. When he did the prequel trilogies, people did not feel as connected. 01:30:55 Vanessa Heller: @Angela This is called asynchronous development and is a clear characteristic of giftedness…a highly developed ability in one area 01:31:08 Jillian DuBois: I have my own adult child with academic/SEL disability + am still his biggest cheerleader…he thrives on positive reinforcement. It propels forward, not backward. 01:31:37 Angela Jefferies: :) I just love my time with him. We have talked about dinosaurs, dragons, and currently Big Ben. 01:31:56 Brian Steinberg: We can't forget that Einstein was left back in 2nd grade? Also, Arthur Miller actually failed English at the same HS I went to! ;) 01:32:01 Vanessa Heller: There are many gifted students at risk actually…. They are not always your high achievers. 01:32:21 Erik Francis: When we talk about “all students are gifted”, what we’re really meaning is the teaching and learning experience often reserved and rewarded for GTs should be provided to all. Gifted is not often a blessing. It can be a “curse”. 01:32:51 Livia Chan: Love how Basil is asking us to reflect. How we treat and teach students stems from our beliefs. 01:33:33 Karen Hamilton: I am not super thrilled to be labeled as a 'soft' teacher because I expect all of my students to succeed. The active students are the ones that usually get the ah ha moments that are wonderful to watch. 01:33:44 Vanessa Heller: @Erik Exactly. Gifted Ed ratites are #BestPractices for all students. 01:33:50 Livia Chan: Wow..."at promise". #profound phrase 01:33:54 Rebecca Coda: Students have promise! This is Strength Based thinking of ALL scholars! 01:34:00 Jon Corippo: Yes - be a strength based educator, not deficit based educator! 01:34:02 Karin HOLLE: Love that at-promise 01:34:10 Maria Irene Pinheiro: Yes, gifted can be a problem. Some students may not be accepted by their peers who don't understand them. 01:34:25 Livia Chan: Relationships are key! 01:34:38 Dr. Rick Jetter: Attendance, Behavior, Academics . . . in that order? 01:34:44 Rebecca Coda: A spin to kids of promise is Kids At Hope. A phenomenal organization and perspective shifter! We are treasure hunters! https://kidsathope.org/ 01:35:12 Jon Corippo: I had bad grades - then I became a teacher, principal and Assistant Sup! Grade only indicate GRADES. 01:36:06 Jon Corippo: 100% yes, Basil! 01:36:14 Patricia Guarnero: love be a strength based educator not a deficit based educator! 01:36:28 Rebecca Coda: Brag tags are strengths based. We are treasure hunters looking to praise. Equity means giving some more tags because their treasure box is low. Kids at promise may need more frequent and smaller opportunities for praise and success. 01:37:08 Karen Hamilton: The 'at-risk' students are students and I have the basics covered. I have snacks, because kids can not learn while hungry, there is a 'female' bag that any one is able to use in case of surprises, after-school tutoring. There is so much that can be done to support students where they are and to help bring them up to where they can go. 01:38:00 Erik Francis: Karen - When you get called “soft” because you expect all students to succeed, turn it back on those who criticize you. Ask them too consider to think of teaching and learning as a race - not as one to “win” but one to “finish”. Do your colleagues believe all students can finish the race? If they say no, then turn it around and say, “So you’re saying that all students CANNOT learn. Because that’s what learning is. Finishing the race on the track toward the standard. So if you don’t think all students can learn, why do we bother to have them run? Better yet, what could YOU do to make sure all students could finish that race and achieve that standard? How could you be the track coach, the pit stop boss, or the horse trainer who guides the runner, the race car driver, or the horse jockey to cross that finish line? How could you support that marathon runner tocross that finish line when their mind give up or their body gives out?” 01:38:04 Livia Chan: Relationships are built with EVERY SINGLE interaction. 01:38:05 Karen Hamilton: Data can be skewed to show just about anything. 01:38:17 Dr. Rick Jetter: You can simply ask any particular student: What can I do to help you? 01:38:41 Livia Chan: Each interaction is an opportunity to make a bigger impact. 01:39:13 Jon Corippo: NUMBER 1 best thing to raise performance -get kids to do ALL the work, start with completion/effort grades. If they practice, they will learn. Once they have a nice rhythm going, you can flip to academic grading. Works like MAGIC. Most kids fail because the DO NOT work, not because they CANNOT do the work. 01:39:27 Rebecca Coda: And meet them on in their turf ecosystem.... recess, lunch, front of school. 01:39:27 Erik Francis: If you don’t think that all students cannot succeed, then you believe that all students cannot learn. So the question is how could you help students to recognize and realize THEIR WAY to learn? How could you show students MANY WAYS to learn? What if you can’t teach A WAY? What if you used a video to show them A WAY you cannot teach? 01:39:53 Dr. Rick Jetter: POVERTY IS NOT A DISABILITY . . . 01:40:06 Jon Corippo: Many of the kids we call “needy” also EXCEL in other areas like sports…. hmmmmm 01:40:20 Livia Chan: This is a new phrase I coined: ATOMIC INTERACTIONS. Make each interaction count. Every positive interaction will lead to a stronger relationship over time! 01:40:41 Rebecca Coda: I Love Atomic Interactions, that means it is intentional. 01:41:06 Erik Francis: Karen - Counter quantitative data with qualitative data. If the score is low, how “good” was that item? Was it clear or unclear? How did the student feel that day? Was testing day the day after they learned their parents are getting divorced, their parent was laid off, their family was evicted, someone has COVID, they broke up with their boyfriend or girlfriend? We need to get qualitative and social and emotional with the data. 01:41:13 Livia Chan: Yes, Rebecca. every single interaction is intentional. Each relationship we have is a gift. 01:41:42 Jon Corippo: Can we PLEASE stop locking the door to make tardy kids feel awkward?? Trust me, coming in late is ALREADY awkward. You know what I tell tardy kids? I say: I’m glad you are here. 01:42:06 Karen Hamilton: Jon, I am the same. 01:42:11 Livia Chan: Agreed, Jon! And say it with a smile with energy! 01:42:30 Livia Chan: Thanks, Vernon! Excited to see yours! 01:42:37 Jon Corippo: YES! Welcome them with no passive aggressive ! 01:42:58 Dr. Rick Jetter: We are recording this, so you will have all slides! 01:43:03 Rebecca Coda: We will pause session #2 for 3-5 minutes to hear from Dr. Basil Marin before moving into session #3. 01:43:04 Maria Irene Pinheiro: I like the phrase AtomicI Interaction.I also believe evry interaction is a gift, specially to those students who by somec ircunstances in their life have problems to fit in. 01:43:25 Jon Corippo: Cannot wait to hear more from Basil! 01:43:51 Rebecca Coda: Pose any questions you have for him as the end of his video. 01:44:18 Rebecca Coda: And.....Matt Woods in the house too. 01:44:29 Livia Chan: Maria, you are speaking my language! Yes! Every interaction is a gift! 01:45:29 Livia Chan: I am always thinking about how students FEEL. Their emotional state makes such a difference in how well they learn. 01:45:37 Erik Francis: Tardy kids need to be “celebrated” for coming to class. I used to make a big deal and say, “HEY! You made it! AWESOME!” I’d even given them a high five or fist bump. I actually had kids tell me they stopped coming to class tardy because they didn’t want me to make such a big deal about them getting there. If they skipped my class and I saw them on campus, I rushed up to them and said, “Oh thank God! I thought something happened to you! Are you okay? You weren’t in class. What’s up?” They would moan and groan about how much of a big deal I made positively and empathetically over their tardiness and skipping, so they came to class to avoid it 😄 01:46:23 Livia Chan: Erik, thank you so much for sharing your story. Love that! 01:46:39 Karen Hamilton: Being a former 'at-risk' I am very aware of how hard it is to come and be at school. For many years I don't think that anyone missed me when I was not in class. I have been on the phone with my families every time one of my students are gone. My school kids are mine to love and protect. 01:46:39 Angela Jefferies: oh, my... 01:46:47 Jon Corippo: Literally EVERY report card I ever got said: Jon doesn’t apply himself! HAHAHA 01:46:56 Jon Corippo: Thanks Matt and Basil!! 01:47:17 Dr. Basil Marin: Thank you all again for attending our presentation 🙏🏽 01:47:19 Livia Chan: Karen, your students and families are blessed to have you for their teacher. 01:48:57 Livia Chan: Gasp! Hi Leah!! So grateful you are here! :) 01:49:00 Lita Briscoe: Thank you Basil and Matt 01:49:04 Jillian DuBois: Basil, I am so glad you brought back up addressing BIASES. It’s not a one and done and we ALL need that reminder. 01:49:10 Karen Hamilton: I did not get the picture of their contact info. Is there anyway that it can be put back up? 01:49:21 Livia Chan: Loved the conversation, Basil and Matt. 01:49:59 Jillian DuBois: Matt, it has been great to connect with you! 01:50:29 Karen Hamilton: Thank you so much. 01:50:32 Susan Masters: I have a lot of takeaways and I am enjoying the sharing 01:50:39 Erik Francis: We should all share our Twitter handle so we can follow each other and learn how we push boundaries. 01:51:17 Dr. Rick Jetter: Always consider open-mindedness . . . FROM MATT WOODS 01:51:32 Jon Corippo: If you loved Matt and Basil - Read The End of Average - mind blowing!! 01:52:10 Karen Hamilton: My twitter is MrsHamilton678 and I would LOVE to connect with everyone. 01:52:21 Jon Corippo: We need to connect more, Basil!! 01:52:45 Dr. Basil Marin: Twitter: @woodfromawoods Email: leadingoutthewoods@gmail.com 01:53:06 Dr. Basil Marin: Website: www.leadingoutthewoods.com 01:53:42 Dr. Basil Marin: Amen bro! Can’t wait! 01:58:05 Rebecca Coda: LOVED your eyeglass analogy. So powerful! 01:58:37 Jon Corippo: he’s butter!!! 01:59:15 Dr. Rick Jetter: Maybe we ALL walk into Monday with a new mindset about SOMETHING or a NEW strategy on something!!!! 01:59:52 Robert Knowles: Is Barry White speaking? :) Need that voice 02:00:20 Dr. Rick Jetter: Think about Vernon's segment as a philosophical shift to go along with your practical strategies shift! AND . . . Stick around for Jon and Cori as they, too, will BLOW your mind! 02:00:45 Dr. Basil Marin: Yessir! 02:01:04 Jon Corippo: Early on, I decided NO admin for me until I could truly lead teachers in all subjects. Took 12 years. 02:01:24 Jon Corippo: And I had worked in 3 districts and a county office too. 02:03:23 Dr. Rick Jetter: Have YOU ever considered a NEW position JUST because it paid more???? 02:03:33 Dr. Rick Jetter: Why or why not did you go for it???? 02:04:13 Livia Chan: Gratitude is meant to be shared. 02:04:49 Rebecca Coda: gratitude actually alters brain chemicals and produces mood altering chemicals. 02:04:54 Livia Chan: I just encouraged my students to thank their friends for being their friends...just yesterday! 02:04:59 Dr. Rick Jetter: TEXT: Thank you for being in my life. HIT SEND. 02:05:40 Livia Chan: Love that encouragement to show gratitude. It truly is one of the best forms of self-care. The response back always fills my soul too! 02:05:45 Rebecca Coda: Gratitude, hugging and smiling all send happy chemicals. Some students need these more frequently throughout the day. This is equity. 02:06:03 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: If you aren’t good at being an admin - there’s never enough money to make you happy! 02:07:09 Rebecca Coda: I am truly grateful to be surrounded by Atomic educators that I can be myself around and learn from. Together we will rehabilitate K-12 public education. You inspire me to know better and do better! 02:07:24 Karen Hamilton: This year I found 'Shout Out' awards at Wal*Mart. I have been encouraging my students to use them for anyone in school or home. It is fun to see them pop up around school and how proud individuals that receive them are. 02:07:30 Rebecca Coda: What if we asked our student scholars their identity and purpose? 02:08:39 Rebecca Coda: When our students struggle and shut down, how might the outcome be different if we shared a gratitude and connected with their purpose and joy? 02:08:46 Livia Chan: Tom is an inspirational person to follow too! @thomascmurray 02:09:29 Dr. Rick Jetter: IDENTITY is so crucial. Do you know who you are now and who you want to become? 02:09:56 Dr. Rick Jetter: In other words . . . STOP being someone you are not OR don't want to be! 02:10:04 Rebecca Coda: Stopping nonsense is taking action! Thank you for burning rubber off the starting line! 02:10:48 Dr. Rick Jetter: What don't you know from A-Z that you want to learn to become a better leader? 02:11:36 Rebecca Coda: And we all have Aquanet garbage taking out days where we are caught off guard too. And that is okay. 02:12:19 Karen Hamilton: I just found my new Bell Work. Having students write out their talents. 02:12:43 Rebecca Coda: Competence & Confidence 02:13:06 Dr. Rick Jetter: Confidence leads to Competence . . . 02:14:13 Dr. Rick Jetter: How do you try to make connections with others that backfire? 02:14:17 Karin HOLLE: Non verbal communication is as important as verbal communication! 02:14:39 Karen Hamilton: It can also go the other way, Dr. Rick Jetter. Competence also leads to Confidence. 02:15:06 Rebecca Coda: Tech tools to utilize and make connections and create opportunities for dynamic communications. Via Tom Murray https://www.thomascmurray.com/blog/digitaltools 02:15:47 Rebecca Coda: 👆300 crowdsourced tech tools categorized by purpose. 02:16:22 Rebecca Coda: Agreed Karen! 02:16:34 Rebecca Coda: and Karin! 02:17:06 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Karen- take it up a notch - have them FRAYER their skills 02:17:24 Dr. Rick Jetter: Do the people (you) lead REALLY care about you? 02:17:32 Karen Hamilton: That is a great suggestion. 02:17:53 Rebecca Coda: Do the people I lead know I really care about them? If not, they will only give you COMPLIANCE. If you want innovation (students too) you have to have connection. 02:18:02 Karen Hamilton: So how can I help my current team leader to become better? 02:18:14 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: plus they will know how to Frayer next week! I know a teacher who does a weekly check in via Frayer, great for SEL 02:19:09 Rebecca Coda: On Digital Native Network I have many links, strategies and resources for engaging students. https://www.digitalnativenetwork.net/engaging-students 02:19:28 Rebecca Coda: Many are printable ready to try including FRAYER! 02:19:45 Rebecca Coda: A Social Contract is essential for any thriving classroom of equity. 02:20:10 Rebecca Coda: Social Contract: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo6e1Y1UWaQ 02:21:14 Rebecca Coda: Kids at Heart is a phenomenal organization for HOW to interact with all humans for leveraging positive outcomes through relationshipsl. 02:22:18 Dr. Rick Jetter: What has been your LATEST authentic connection? 02:22:21 Rebecca Coda: What are YOU absolutely passionate about in your life? I truly want to know! 02:22:34 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: TEACHING and bbq 02:23:14 Karen Hamilton: Becoming a rememberable teacher for good, my family, and reading. 02:23:28 Livia Chan: What are you passionate about? I ALSO love asking people this question! You see people come alive! 02:23:48 Rebecca Coda: Watching my teenagers grow and learn. And our next project with PB..... will share at the end. I'm obsessed with restoring K-12 public education. 02:24:03 Dr. Rick Jetter: WHAT are YOU passionate about? STOP being drawn to $$$ as a mirage to what you think you might want and really need. 02:24:21 Rebecca Coda: The power of stories can never be over emphasized! 02:25:02 Dr. Rick Jetter: Have you ever heard . . . "I make good $$$, but it is NOT my passion."? 02:25:46 Lita Briscoe: If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. 02:25:51 Jeff Brain: Storytelling is so key. Working on a world building tutorial for StoriumEDU this weekend. Collaborative storytelling in a game based framework. 02:26:01 Rebecca Coda: Even when my priorities aren't in the right order, I'm still doing my best at the time. Sometimes I need people to have courageous conversations with me to redirect me to my purpose. 02:26:26 Rebecca Coda: Awesome resource Jeff! Storium EDU. Will you share the link? 02:27:08 Jeff Brain: https://storiumedu.com/ 02:28:06 Dr. Rick Jetter: How will you TAKE ACTION on Monday to GROW versus EARN? 02:28:54 Dean Smith: TheWrightStuff...Awesome! 02:31:41 Dr. Rick Jetter: READ the "Bottom Line" slide and reflect on each of those areas in deep reflection. 02:32:14 Karen Hamilton: I ordered the book and will start reading it next weekend. 02:34:39 Karen Hamilton: It is going by WAY too fast that I haven't noticed the time passing. 02:35:31 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: We need to NOT see school as a place where we eliminate people, it needs to be a place where we build people. 02:35:38 Livia Chan: Rebecca, love how you connected the 3 presentations with intentionality. 02:38:16 Dr. Rick Jetter: Identity is HUGE for me as a reflection . . . Identity as a teacher . . . and whom I want to be . . . identity as a teacher and HOW I want to operate . . . 02:40:45 Leah Connell: I’m blessed to have Livia’s INTENTION daily at work💝 02:42:22 Karen Hamilton: Part of my identity is being in the moment. I leave school work at school so that I can be Mom at home. Am I behind in putting in grades, yes; however, I am getting caught up and know that I am better for it. I am where I need to be and who I need to be. That is why I am still going strong and not feeling burnt out. 02:42:23 Livia Chan: Blessed & grateful for your love, Leah! Love you! 02:42:35 Jillian DuBois: Leah…You are SO blessed. Livia is my soul sister and the most caring human on this planet. xoxo 02:44:06 Livia Chan: Jillian, you fill my heart with joy. I am blessed to know you. 02:44:18 Karen Hamilton: Livia Chan I am grateful that I was able to get to know you a bit today. 02:44:34 Livia Chan: Karen, thank you so much for sharing. I love how you know how to take good care of yourself. 02:44:55 Susan Masters: I'm in Bermuda. 70 degrees 02:45:09 Livia Chan: Appreciate you, Karen, for your sharing. I've been blessed by your presence here. 02:45:32 Helena Gaspar: thak you all! 02:45:36 Jillian DuBois: How EXCITING! 02:45:53 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Remember: You don’t HAVE to Teach, you GET to! 02:46:19 Dr. Rick Jetter: PASSION AND REHABILITATION CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME!!!!!!! 02:47:02 Livia Chan: All means all students! 02:47:05 Karen Hamilton: I can honestly say that I am living the dream baby. I LOVE my work, plus it is commercial free Soaps some days that has me laughing. 02:47:30 Livia Chan: Karen, your passion inspires me. 02:48:01 Karen Hamilton: Humor is key to being in the moment. 02:48:47 Karen Hamilton: Besides I am getting some priceless Life Lessons. 02:50:01 Karen Hamilton: What are you immortal Jon and Cori? 700 years of teaching?!? 02:53:20 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Just FEELs like 700 years hahahhaa 02:54:01 Lita Briscoe: Did it freeze? 02:54:07 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Seems like! 02:54:11 Jeff Brain: Cliffhanger… 02:54:21 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: and we are back! 02:54:27 Livia Chan: Lol, love that, Jeff! 02:54:43 Lita Briscoe: 👍 02:54:50 Jeff Brain: The power of storytelling, Jon does that so well 02:56:02 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Tapioca is my fave, FYI! 02:57:41 Livia Chan: We don't even need popsicle sticks. How many times have we called on students that we think are not paying attention just to catch them? 02:58:31 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Livia - yes! When we randomly kids, we just push their fight or flight button! That’s not good a brain response! 02:58:40 Livia Chan: Yes! Just need to think about how you would feel. 02:59:56 Livia Chan: So true, Cori. I'm sorry that happened to you. 03:00:27 Karen Hamilton: That is up for debate. My 3rd grade teacher HATED kids and was mean. Moving to the US from overseas was a pain. It was painful and I was belittled for writing in cursive and sometimes with a pen. That is the time when I began to loath school. 03:01:54 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: We will claim many things are “not developmentally appropriate”, but they still do cloip charts - I’d argue this may be the MOST developmentally inappropriate things we can do in class. 03:02:04 Kimberly Voge: When I returned to the classroom in 2019 after 8 years as an ed tech coach, I TOTALLY revamped what I did. So many things that are common practices are NOT necessary for student success. I focused on building relationships and soft starts for kids….OMG, what a big difference. It was SO AWESOME. We had quite the great working relationship and smooth transition to crisis learning of March 2020. 03:02:26 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: 100% true, Karen! 03:02:31 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: AND KIM! 03:02:36 Dr. Rick Jetter: How do YOU use incentives in your class? 03:02:54 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: I make the LEARNING the incentive! 03:03:11 Susan Masters: Agree… quit with disciplines strategies. Need more nurturing and Social Emotional Learning Strategies for both children and adults 03:03:20 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: We don’t need all these complicated points systems. Kids tire of them quickly. 03:04:22 Jeff Brain: But think about how many kids adore the complicated point systems called D & D…how can we use that to leverage learning? 03:05:23 Livia Chan: Kim, LOOOVE what you shared. So resonated. I came back from 6 years as an ed tech coach & did the same...relationships & soft starts. Game changer! Thanks for sharing! 03:05:42 Livia Chan: There is ALWAYS more than one way to say the same thing! 03:06:40 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Jeff - be careful, kids are programmed by school to tell us what we want to hear! (That being said, I’m not against point systems if you like doing them, folks don’t NEED to to be good good teachers). 03:06:58 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: And no noisy pencil sharpener! 03:07:14 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: And no trips to the pencil sharpener! 03:07:32 Jeff Brain: So true, Jon. 03:07:39 Livia Chan: Be creative with how you interact with students when they aren't doing what you think they should be doing. 03:07:55 Dr. Rick Jetter: There is no thing such as a mistake. RETRYS should simply be reattempted. 03:09:08 Livia Chan: Jon, we work SO hard to build relationships. One negative interaction with students can tear that apart in seconds. 03:10:32 Livia Chan: Peter Parker principle: With great power comes great responsibility. We have the power to uplift students through our atomic interactions but we also have the power to really hurt them with our words. 03:11:48 Jillian DuBois: Haha, my kids skip, walk backwards, + ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE when we transition from place to place. The only rule is to use whispers as to not disturb other classes + respect space boundaries. THAT’S IT. 03:11:54 Livia Chan: Cori, I absolutely loved that poker chip analogy! 03:12:01 Kathleen Shafer: Totally like grandma! I’m going to use that! 03:12:02 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: YAAAAAAAAASSSSS Jillian!! 03:12:02 Dr. Rick Jetter: In your classroom, are there lines that you won't budge on or lines that SHOULD be blurry for a reason? 03:12:16 Karen Hamilton: When students attempt to learn and complete assignments is beautiful. I have a basket of "boojee" stickers that the kids LOVE. I have kids trying harder to learn and ask questions. I love needing to get more stickers as it is easier for students to own their learning and effort. 03:13:07 Jillian DuBois: When we model boundaries with responsibility + respect…kids will follow. In my honest opinion. Not that it’s perfect, but it’s a plan + a pathway with purpose. 03:13:31 Dr. Rick Jetter: KNOW BETTER = ADJUST WHAT YOU DO. 03:13:37 Maria Irene Pinheiro: We have to be careful with the words we use.We may think that certain words are"harmles" but for some students from some!"environments" they may be understood as offensive 03:13:43 Kathleen Kerrison: I cringed when I heard colleagues start class with the yell "get into 2 lines". I now stand around outside with my class and have a chat. Sometimes my students say to me "are we going inside soon?" 03:13:52 Kimberly Voge: The 7 Ps-proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance! And Improvise, adapt, overcome! 03:13:52 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: I call that tight but loose leadership Jillian, some things are a hard no, but many are open to being in the moment. 03:14:42 Karen Hamilton: Kimberly Voge you are brilliant. Thank you for sharing the 7Ps. 03:15:08 Kimberly Voge: It’s how I was raised! My dad was in the army lol 03:15:49 Karen Hamilton: Oh another Army B.R.A.T. Love it. 03:15:52 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Adpt, Improvise and Overcome! Thanks to Clint Eastwood for that gem! 03:16:09 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: ONE RULE people! 03:16:12 Julie Baumgardner: Those are AWESOME!! 03:16:31 Kimberly Voge: AWWW YAY! 03:16:33 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Shoutout to Kim! 03:16:37 Kimberly Voge: They make good stickers! 03:16:46 Dr. Rick Jetter: DO THE RIGHT THING AT THE RIGHT TIME . . . 03:16:57 Dr. Rick Jetter: IS THAT WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING? 03:17:16 Kimberly Voge: And kids really do know what the right thing to do is! 03:17:24 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Kim and Cori are both one rule teachers now! 03:18:01 Kimberly Voge: No more “rules” posters 03:18:05 Karen Hamilton: Now I want that as a sticker and as a GIANT poster for my classroom. 03:18:24 Livia Chan: Love that. I don't review rules either. I have 3 questions on the board all year. 1 Will you do the right thing? 2 Are you doing today's best? 3 What will you do in service to others? Thanks so much Jon and Cori! 03:26:03 Janelle Carroll: Thanks, Kim! I don't get these admin....ugh! I 03:26:04 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: YAY!! 03:26:09 Cori Orlando: Imagine if I had told this girl that she could only do this if she read a chapter book? 03:26:20 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Hi Janelle! 03:26:44 Janelle Carroll: Hi Jon! Love EVERYTHING you are saying!! 03:26:51 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: AMEN Vanessa! 03:26:54 Cori Orlando: PLEASE know I am not bashing admin. I was one 🙂 03:27:16 Jillian DuBois: Jon - do you remember SRA reading cards? THOSE were the worst… 03:27:21 Vanessa Heller: Exactly, Cori. We ned to ask ourselves, what is the ultimate goal? To earn a sticker? To reach a certain reading level? NO! To learn and love learning! 03:27:43 Julie Baumgardner: I'm glad the girl didn't let admin get her either!! And right, not bashing, they have a tough job. I don't always respond with the right words and attitudes 100% of the time either. 03:28:06 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Jillian - ANYTHING on robot teacher mode, with no authentic feedback is the worst! 03:28:39 Vanessa Heller: I love challenging kids…. They say they can’t… I say I dare you to try! This also comes with setting the healthy example of #FailForward! 03:29:01 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: This is why ADMIN has to be the LEAD EDUCATOR in schools, not a bureaucrat - an enforcer of policies. 03:29:02 Cori Orlando: Wait for it… 03:29:09 Julie Baumgardner: Right on, Jon!! 03:29:21 Cori Orlando: But then… 03:29:37 Rebecca Coda: And admin are also giving us their best. Relationships are key…. What are they passionate about today? We all will have know better do better moments when we are mentored and observed doing something we need to stop! 03:29:38 Julie Baumgardner: My kids respond with, "but aren't I cheating?" 03:29:52 Karen Hamilton: My goal is trying to get the kids stronger than when they come to me. I have kids that are at 1st grade reading, and at the end of the year they are 3rd grade readers and we celebrate. I love progress and growing. 03:30:16 Rebecca Coda: Show what you know IS Visible thinking which is so important! 03:30:22 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Julie - that’s why I’m clear: I will still TEACH you grammar, but you’ll also be able to CHECK YOURSELF in real life. 03:30:27 Jillian DuBois: YES. I LOVE talk to text - students still see the spelling and have to check to make sure autocorrect didn’t take over…I find even my kids that do NOT like to write will brilliantly speak text into assignments like a pro - ON THEIR OWN! 03:31:17 Cori Orlando: The conversations that kids have to with each other during, is the stuff. More so than the product many times. 03:31:24 Livia Chan: Once I understood "show what you know," students became more empowered. Small change. Big impact. 03:31:38 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Love show whaat you know! 03:31:46 Rebecca Coda: “How might we”…….such a powerful mindset shift from “I can’t” Altered my thinking forever! 03:31:58 Karen Hamilton: BWAHAHAHA kids can do so much more than we give them credit for, especially when it comes to technology. 03:32:00 Livia Chan: There are so many ways to learn what students understand. Students LOVE to create! 03:32:07 Vanessa Heller: Right, Cori - And these conversions are worthy of noting…they are formative assessments! 03:32:33 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: “How might we…”, correct Rebecca! 03:32:37 Cori Orlando: Many times we unintentially shut the door on kids before they can even touch the handle. I know I have. That is why I intentionally try to do better. 03:33:30 Livia Chan: Offer opportunities to create and make their own meaning from the learning. 03:33:32 Rebecca Coda: And even their ‘weird” stuff like Jillian shared in the first session! 03:34:07 Livia Chan: My students LOVE working on their passion projects! They LOVE to share a part of what makes them feel joyfully alive. 03:34:24 Cori Orlando: Since we are sharing stickers, here is Know Better Do Better (#KBDB): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZneDKCn_lPcoLhfDbS7Fwkz1ja8w0dYX/view?usp=sharing 03:34:27 Leah Connell: Shrek: “change is good donkey!” 03:34:51 Vanessa Heller: And including the kids in our own failures is not only helpful, but fun and gives them ownership! The kids should feel comfortable expressing when an activity or lesson doesn’t work for them or when they ask to approach it differently. Cool by me! 03:34:53 Rebecca Coda: Students are like onions…..they have layers! Being comfortable is one! 03:35:10 Cori Orlando: Fail Forward sticker: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eOicSSsmEdIajFknCcPS8Ba1JhQzpmoN/view?usp=sharing 03:35:12 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: We had waffle parties. =) 03:35:14 Julie Baumgardner: Thanks, Cori! I need that one in my desk area as a daily reminder. 03:35:23 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: Roby - nice!! 03:35:30 Dr. Rick Jetter: How will you STACK the chips for your students? 03:35:31 Karen Hamilton: I am a messy human and my kids have seen me cry at not able to help engage my students. 03:35:32 Rebecca Coda: When we embrace their passion and THEIR version of their future self we win BIG! 03:35:35 Erik Francis: We need to stop saying Maslow Before Bloom’s We need to say Maslow with Bloom’s. This stratifies and silos education, deemphasizing one focus and emphasizing another. How can we make teaching and learning standards-based, socially and emotionally supportive, and student responsive? 03:35:55 Dr. Rick Jetter: #KBDB 03:36:00 Dr. Rick Jetter: #100StopSeries 03:36:03 Cori Orlando: @Karen I cried in front of my kids. When it happened, a shift happened (for the better) in the class as a whole. 03:36:26 Rebecca Coda: We need to hear more Erik! Next time we need to showcase these ideas! 03:36:31 Erik Francis: We need to stop stratifying and siloing education. Stop focusing on one versus another. Take a balanced approach. Not this OR that or this INSTEAD OF that. This WITH that! 03:36:39 Karen Hamilton: BWAHAHA Jon and Cori you are aging really well from going from 700 years to 4000 years of teaching. 03:36:40 Julie Baumgardner: I think it's good for the kids to see my emotion. It makes me more human. Happy and sad 03:36:42 Rebecca Coda: Couldn’t agree more! 03:37:08 Cori Orlando: Corippo has 680 of those years. Only 20 are mine 🙂- I’m not that old. 03:37:26 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: I agree - it’s healthy to be emotional. Not necessarily being emotion and dragging kids into being emotional. But when it’s real, let them see it. 03:37:50 Erik Francis: You teach standards and you teach students. Or you teach students and the standards. How can we develop students’ education, experience, and endowments into personal expertise? How can we teach and reach the students and reach them by teaching them? 03:38:04 Erik Francis: Maybe we need to stop say “teach” and say “guide and support” students. 03:38:10 Jillian DuBois: I was shamed by my principal for crying a few years ago. Never will forget that! 03:38:34 Cori Orlando: It sticks with you, right Jillian!? 03:38:48 Erik Francis: It’s okay to cry. 03:38:57 Janelle Carroll: Yes, admin are focusing on the WRONG things! AR results and lining up in a straight line....not even noticing all the wonderful things happening....principals need to VALUE innovative teachers!! 03:39:21 Erik Francis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y52bs0aX6v8 03:39:21 Jillian DuBois: Yep. I still recall that day, but it didn’t stop me from being authentic with my students. That’s not who I am! 03:39:52 Erik Francis: Check that link! That’s Rosey Grier singing! 03:40:25 Livia Chan: All of us are here to support you so please reach out to us! It would fill us with joy to connect! :) 03:40:36 Susan Masters: This has been Awesome 03:40:38 Rebecca Coda: All the videos are posted on the PD Pit STOP tab on www.pushboundconsulting.com and on our YouTube Channel 03:40:40 Karen Hamilton: I have been told that my class was out of control and that I needed a better management plan, in front of my students. My students were recreating the highlights of our unit into a movie. While I was devastated, my kids jumped on the Admin and defended me and what we were doing. 03:41:01 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: NCLB damaged admin. Now it’s too focused on data, instead of CHILDREN. 03:41:06 Erik Francis: Well, we need to tell the truth and show the reality to admin. We talk a lot about changing. However, sometimes the barriers to change are our admin and colleagues. 03:41:13 Rebecca Coda: Use the #100StopSeries hashtag and share your STOPs next week and we will be randomly giving away prizes! 03:41:28 Rebecca Coda: Leadership truth is the beginning of authentic solutions! 03:41:29 Florence Dollard: Thank you, everyone, for an amazing learning experience! 03:41:37 Livia Chan: Yes, self-compassion! 03:41:39 Bambi Narvarte: Thank you, everyone! 03:41:44 Vanessa Heller: Ack…. I lost Cori for a sec! 03:41:45 Erik Francis: Educators are white knuckling to keep the status quo and prevent the change. The school that existed prior to March 14, 2020, does not exist anymore. 03:41:50 Jeff Brain: Much thanks, gives me hope for the future of learning 03:41:50 Livia Chan: So grateful for everyone joining us today! 03:41:53 Cori Orlando: Fail Forward Stickers” https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eOicSSsmEdIajFknCcPS8Ba1JhQzpmoN/view?usp=sharing 03:42:07 Erik Francis: Let’s follow each other on Twitter. @maverikedu12 03:42:40 Cori Orlando: #KBDB stickers: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1BiRfF3S6o94-kI1qS-1V-lsJ4cDm8GumKHzKLNdU6is/edit?usp=sharing 03:42:44 Jon Corippo @jcorippo: My twitter and TIkTok: @jcorippo 03:42:51 Patricia Guarnero: Thank you so much!!!
